Loy Krathong: A Tradition That Connects People and Nature
Why do we float krathongs?
Loi Krathong is an ancient tradition. Evidence confirming when it was practiced is available. However, each locality may present and believe in Loi Krathong. Examples in our drive are worshiping Phra Kesa Kaew Chulamani in the Tavatimsa heaven, worshiping the Buddha’s footprint on the land along the Nammatha River, which is now the Nerputtha River in India, or welcoming the Lord Buddha on the first day he returned from the heavenly world to teach the Lord Buddha again.
The purpose of Loi Krathong Day
Loi Krathong also has the purpose to worship Phra Upakut Thera who recited spells in the deep sea or the navel of the sea. Some places float Krathong to worship the gods according to their beliefs. Some places float Krathong to show gratitude to the Goddess of the River, which is the source of water for humans to use in various ways, including asking for forgiveness for throwing waste into it. In some areas, it is done to remember ancestors who have passed away or to avert bad luck, float away sorrows and illnesses. Most people also pray for what they wish for.
